obstreperous

\ub-STREP-uh-rus\

adjective

1 : marked by unruly or aggressive noisiness : clamorous
2 : stubbornly resistant to control : unruly

Noise for the sake of rebellion. A chorus of horns on Madison Avenue. A screaming child in a shopping cart. Holding a button down on a touchtone phone to shut someone up. Fingers on a blackboard. Clearing a throat. Slamming a door. Punk rock. A drunken foray into a kitchen cabinet. Tap dancing. Blowing leaves at 7 am. Leaving the window open while you fuck: loudly. Clipping toenails in the common area. The OBSTREPEROUS swoosh of nylon clad thighs rubbing against each other.

You want the world to know you are wearing nylon, and you are not to be fucked with.

  2. Perhaps you don't use this so much in America, but in the UK (Australia, NZ, etc) this word is most common in its colloquial reduced form: 'stroppy'.
